Your first "worldly" heroes?

one of the first things that i realized after i left the organization was that i could actually have human heroes who weren't bible characters.

now this will give you an idea of how much of a nerd i am, but the first person i began to idolize as a 17-18 year old teenager was richard p. feynman, the mid 20th century theoretical physicist.

of course, now i'm on my way to becoming a physicist myself, although i'm going into the experimental side instead of theory.

I wasn't aware of this:
The Jews during Jesus' time believed that the soul return to God upon death (except for the Sagacees). In fact, they thought the soul/spirit of man hung around the body for three days before going to be with God.

Thanks for the input. I guess the question is: What is the soul? and What is the spirit?
Not positive here.

The scriptures are very specific in that our spirits do not "sleep". 2 Corinthians 5:5-9 (King James Version) 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. 6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.

Hello there: I don't think the spirit sleeps either. But does the 'spirit' have personality?
I think our soul does, have all our memories and thoughts..and sleeps at death.
In Vs. 5...the spirit given to us is God's spirit.
In Vs. 6... Paul talks against being 'at home' in our bodies. Why? Because our bodies are of the fallen flesh and inclined toward sin.
In Vs. 8...Paul talks that we would rather be at home with God, than, at home in our imperfect bodies.
In Vs. 9...Paul talks that whether we are able to ignore our imperfect flesh desires or not, may we be accepted by him.
Sorry, but I'm not understanding how this scripture is saying, we don't sleep at death?

i posted this in the middle of someone elses thread by mistake.

my mother and her friend were talking at da weekend and they reckon we are not only in the last days but the last hours.

i know most of you dont believe that anymore, but do some of you still get scared by it.

I do think we are in the last hour.. but there is nothing to be afraid of, except for the evil doers.. A good heart is what God is looking for.

i don't mean this is as a debate, but merely an observation.

i have noticed that a lot (not all) of us post and participate in topics that are nothing but arguements and debates over what should be believed.

i have also been guilty of this, but just began to wonder, are we really free?.

Very good point..
I think we are free when we realize, we don't need anyone to teach us, but let the holy spirit do it's job.
My new favorite scripture, that I never once saw, in the 26 years, I was a witness.
I John 2:27 NIV "As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit, just as it has taught you, remain in him."
So, really people have to look into themselves at what the holy spirit is teaching them.
No point in arguing, because when the holy spirit teaches that person, we are talking to, then it will be revealed.. not thru us, but from God, to the individual...

HI there,
My idea is this: Jehovah is not stupid or anal.. He doesn't care what name we use. Just like a parent wouldn't care what his child called him, as long as it was a sincere and loving attempt.. If we used the wrong name...or pronounciation or no name but 'God', he'd accept it.. and why?
